NEAR COASTAL FISHING
Mackerel
Mackerel are quite plentiful from late May to November, as long as the Bluefish are not around!!. Unfortunetly, in the past few years the Bluefish have been arriving earlier and earlier. Most Mackerel are 6" to 18" and weigh up to two pounds. We fish each rod with four hooks, and it is not uncommon to fill all four hooks at one time. It gets quite exciting, to say the least, when everyone on board is frantically bringing in four Mackerel at a time!
Striped Bass

Striped Bass, or "Stripers", start showing up in early May as small fish under five pounds. As the season progresses into June and through September the larger fish invade the area. These fish will range from 20" to 48" or BIGGER!!!. The past few seasons have seen record amounts of Striped Bass being landed. The abundance of fish has even led to a size reduction by the State of Maine. Anglers are now allowed to keep one Striper between 20" and 26" or one striper over 40". Striped Bass are a very good fighting sportfish. They are also a very tasty fish, that some people will compare to Haddock. The meat is white, and not strong smelling or tasting.
Bluefish

These ferocious fighters with razor sharp teeth have been showing up around the first of July. Bluefish are known for their unbelievable fight. The Bluefish sometimes can be seen right on the surface in a huge school. This is when we catch them with top water poppers. This is unquestionably the most exciting way to catch any fish, as they jump right out of the water to slam the lure. When we cannot spot the fish on the surface we troll deep diving lures. Bluefish aren't the best eating, but some people do like them depending on how they are cooked.
